Andrew McGuinness: Milestone Momentum: Celebrating 100 Drivers With West Yorkshire's 'Route to Success'

Amid the turbulent times facing the transport sector, particularly the acute driver shortage, West Yorkshire stands out as a pioneer of positive change. This change was set into motion by an essential dialogue between the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) and Mayor Tracey Brabin, who sought solutions to the escalating driver shortage.

Taking the initiative, the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, steered by Mayor Brabin, strategically allocated funds from the Adult Education Budget, in partnership with Realise who created the 'Route to Success' programme. This visionary programme, structured in two stages, is a testament to the commitment to transform complete novices into professional bus drivers.

The programme's success is marked by the induction of the 100th driver, a milestone that speaks volumes about the positive impact of this initiative on the transport sector. Realises sector expertise was pivotal in reaching this landmark. Their understanding of the industry enabled them to develop a curriculum that goes beyond the conventional, making the 'Route to Success' a programme that truly stands up to its name.

Stage 1 of the programme lays the groundwork, debunking myths and providing essential knowledge about the bus driving profession. Realise, with its extensive background in educational services, has meticulously tailored this stage to ensure candidates receive a realistic overview of what a career in bus driving entails. On completion of this stage learners can choose to seek employment with large operators, or they can progress to Stage 2. Should they wish to pursue employment with a large operator, Realise will ensure introductions are made and interviews arranged.

Progressing to Stage 2, Realise has curated a fully funded licence acquisition course, which is instrumental for candidates to gain hands-on experience and the qualifications necessary to thrive in the industry. This stage is crucial, as it transitions participants from theoretical learning to practical application, preparing them for successful careers with local SMEs.

Realises contribution extends beyond the programme's structure. Their in-depth industry knowledge and collaborative approach with large operators and SMEs have been integral in shaping a curriculum that is both practical and engaging. The curriculum is continually refined to keep up with industry standards, ensuring that the 'Route to Success' is not just educational but also aligns closely with the current needs of the transport sector.

As West Yorkshire celebrates the 100-driver milestone, the echoes of this success are felt across the region. South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA), following this successful blueprint, has also engaged Realise to replicate the 'Route to Success' programme, aiming to alleviate their driver shortages and bolster the local transport industry.

Manchester has taken a slightly different approach with the GMCA's 'Bus Driver Bootcamp', also delivered by Realise. This intensive training course combines practical driving experience with classroom-based learning, designed to fast-track participants into the driving seat. The bootcamp has sparked considerable interest among the residents.

In addition to SYMCA & GMCA, the Tees Valley Combined Authority and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority are also funding the Stage 1 element of the course in their regions.

Sheryl McBride's journey, a narrative of personal transformation achieved through the 'Route to Success', exemplifies the profound impact of Realises well-crafted curriculum. Her story is a singular testament to how a well-developed course can facilitate a life-changing career switch.

The 'Route to Success' programme is more than an initiative; it's a blueprint for sustainable employment and community empowerment within the transport industry, made possible by Realise and the Combined Authorities that have chosen to deliver this training programme.
